Roger Myers, former Rolling Stones accountant and one of the UK’s most successful restauranteurs, fulfilled a lifelong dream of moving to the Caribbean to retire. That was until he saw St. Lucia’s landmark Pitons and immediately fell in love. Following his US$100m renovation of Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, Myers tells his story and describes how his newest Beachfront Collection is the icing on the Sugar Beach cake…
Q: Oprah advised that everyone put St. Lucia on their bucket list. How did you discover Sugar Beach?
A: I was on a Caribbean sailing trip with my wife. Approaching from the north, our yacht sailed aroundPetit Piton and my jaw dropped. It’s just the most unspeakably beautiful place. The beach, the rainforest, the Pitons, the sunsets… everything about it is mystical. However, the hotel at that time was utterly terrible and I thought that was such a waste. I said to myself, “if I ever do anything again in my life, this will be the thing that I do”.
Q: Describe your vision for the re-development of Sugar Beach.
A: I wanted to create a destination that was both very high end and luxurious, but also unpretentious, extremely laid back and relaxing. I really wanted to create an experience and environment that remained true to the Caribbean, and not another vanilla branded, resort, which I just find boring.
We have just under 150 acres of beautiful rainforest, so in addition to the hotel, I also wanted to develop a number of what I would consider to be perfect Caribbean homes. Not just the setting and the beach, but I wanted to layer in impeccable property management services. That is so important when you are time poor. I want our owners to just walk in, straight from the airport and the stress of London or New York, and be able to go straight into enjoying their vacations. I want everything be simply pristine. That’s my definition of a true luxury retreat.
Q: Tell us more about your recent creation, The Beachfront Collection
A: Having finished the renovation of the resort, we were finally able to break ground upon what I consider to be our finest beachfront land at the resort, possibly in the entire Caribbean. It’s just an incredible location, in the middle of a UNESCO World Heritage site, framed by the Pitons on either side and with direct access to the beach and Caribbean Sea.. It’s simply a spot deserving of the very best homes.
I’d been fan of Alex Michaelis, our architect, for several years and he’s just brilliantly creative. I knew he was going to be the guy to design something sensational and completely in keeping with the location. I’m so proud of what we’ve created together. I really don’t think there is anything finer to be found anywhere in the West Indies.
With architecture and interiors by Michaelis Boyd Associates, The Beachfront Collection at Sugar Beach offers the ultimate in barefoot luxury. The five estate homes can be sold with beautifully appointed furniture packages and are managed by Viceroy Hotels & Resorts.
